Daily eSIM | 3HK DIY Prepaid SIM: A Hong Kong Carrier SIM With a Real Number That Receives SMS Codes

"Daily eSIM" introduces one pay-as-you-go / prepaid / free-trial eSIM every day. Issue No. 22: the official prepaid SIM from 3HK (3 Hong Kong), one of Hong Kong's big-three carriers — the DIY Prepaid SIM. No contract, no monthly fee, and it comes with a real Hong Kong mobile number that can receive SMS verification codes. You can buy the eSIM online and install it by scanning a QR code, even from mainland China.

One-line pitch

3HK's DIY Prepaid SIM is an official carrier prepaid card from Hutchison Telecom Hong Kong: the SIM itself charges no monthly fee, you buy data combos as needed, and crucially it carries a real Hong Kong phone number — voice calls and SMS included, unlike data-only travel eSIMs.

Plan type: prepaid stored-value SIM, buy combos as you go

  • Greater Bay Area 365-day combo: 45GB shared across mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau for one year — 40GB general roaming data plus 5GB social data limited to 6 apps (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, LINE, WeChat, Signal);
  • Other annual combos: 35GB for UK/US/Canada/Australia/NZ, 17GB Asia-Pacific, 13GB 100+ destinations worldwide (all include 5GB social data), plus a 30-day 15GB Greater Bay Area pack;
  • PAYG fallback: no combo needed — balance deducts at standard rates, handy for cheap number retention.

Price reference (as of October 22, 2026)

  • Greater Bay Area 365-day 45GB combo: HK$268 (40GB general roaming data + 5GB social data, shared across mainland China / Hong Kong / Macau; 3HK official DIY page, live on Oct 22, 2026);
  • New SIM: minimum spend HK$50 for a DIY prepaid SIM (official FAQ);
  • Sibling product reference: 3HK International Universal SIM face value HK$100 (valid 180 days from activation; each top-up auto-extends 365 days);
  • Roaming SMS: HK$3.5 per outgoing message; no charge item for incoming SMS (see key question below);
  • Device-change cost: each eSIM transfer / QR reissue costs HK$28 for prepaid users (postpaid users get 3 free per year).

Key question: can it receive SMS verification codes?

Yes, with two prerequisites.

First, it's a real Hong Kong number, not a data-only card, so SMS works at the network level. Second, you must complete real-name registration: under 3HK's current terms (Clause 24), a DIY SIM that hasn't completed real-name registration cannot receive SMS at all, in Hong Kong or abroad. Visitors can register with a passport or other travel document; one document covers up to 10 SIMs.

While roaming in mainland China, receiving SMS is free: 3HK's official roaming tariff lists only outgoing roaming SMS (HK$3.5/message) with no charge item for incoming SMS (the long-standing Hong Kong carrier convention). You must still enable data roaming on this SIM and have a roaming signal. Not field-tested for this review — send yourself a test message after activation.

Pros

  • Real Hong Kong number: receives SMS verification codes, which data-only eSIMs can't;
  • Official carrier product: no contract, no monthly fee, no admin fee; the number is tied to your own email account;
  • Install from mainland China: buy the eSIM online, get the QR code by email, scan and go — no trip to Hong Kong needed (physical SIMs ship to HK addresses only);
  • Hong Kong breakout: browsing from the mainland exits via Hong Kong, so Google, YouTube and WhatsApp work directly;
  • Three-region annual pack: 40GB usable data per year (~3GB/month), fine for light use, hotspot allowed.

Cons

  • Expensive if you only want to keep the number: a new SIM's number is valid 180 days; extending it a full year costs ongoing top-ups. 3HK's International Universal SIM (one top-up extends a year) is cheaper for pure number retention;
  • Device changes cost money: the eSIM QR code is single-scan; transferring to a new phone costs HK$28 each time;
  • Annual combos activate immediately on purchase, and the SIM must be activated within 60 days — don't stockpile;
  • "Social data" is narrow: the 5GB only covers 6 apps; Telegram and YouTube don't count;
  • Hong Kong breakout cuts both ways: TikTok doesn't serve Hong Kong and ChatGPT doesn't support the Hong Kong region;
  • China-sold iPhones: some mainland iPhone models lack eSIM or only accept mainland carriers — use a physical SIM or an eSIM adapter card;
  • The management app is only on the Hong Kong App Store.

Who it's for

  • People traveling frequently between mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau who need Hong Kong data plus a code-receiving HK number;
  • Anyone in mainland China who wants Hong Kong-breakout internet without fiddling with VPNs;
  • Short stays in the UK/US/Australia/Canada or Asia-Pacific — grab the matching annual combo.

Not for: anyone who just wants the cheapest possible HK number for codes (DIY retention is pricey — look at the Universal SIM or Club Sim instead); heavy data users (~3GB/month from the annual pack); heavy TikTok users; mainland-iPhone owners without eSIM who don't want the hassle.

Buying & real-name registration

  • Buy the eSIM on 3HK's official site / My3 App; the QR code arrives by email after payment. The email you enter at purchase becomes the account — use your own;
  • Complete real-name registration (Hong Kong law) before you can receive SMS; in mainland China, turn on data roaming + VoLTE;
  • Reseller risk: "pre-loaded annual pack" cards from agents are tied to the seller's email — they can transfer the eSIM away and intercept your codes anytime. Open the account yourself.

Notes

Compiled from 3HK's official DIY prepaid site and terms (verified live Oct 22, 2026: Greater Bay Area annual pack HK$268, HK$50 minimum for a new SIM, HK$3.5 per outgoing roaming SMS), 优哥跨境's hands-on guide (Oct 5, 2026) and HK01's annual-SIM roundup (Oct 9, 2026), as of October 22, 2026. Plans and prices change frequently — check the official site before buying. Not field-tested; free incoming-SMS-while-roaming is inferred from the absence of any charge item (the site does not state "incoming free" explicitly).
