Lead: Over the past 24 hours, AI's main characters stopped just announcing models and started doing the work: OpenAI's agent pipeline dug up 948 Linux kernel privilege-escalation flaws, and Anthropic's Claude cracked a 40-year-old cell-structure mystery. On the open-source side, Baidu and PFN each scored a release, while Meta and OpenAI kept buying and shipping — and where DeepSeek trains its next model now matters to the whole Chinese compute chain.

1. OpenAI's autonomous security pipeline found 948 Linux kernel root exploits — for about $1.2 million

OpenAI disclosed on November 4 that its autonomous security research pipeline screened 2,308 candidate flaws, reproduced 1,724 of them, and confirmed 948 exploitable local privilege-escalation vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel, at a total cost of roughly $1.21 million in API credits — about $1,279 per vulnerability. By the end of the study, 61 flaws had been patched upstream, 43 were in the fix pipeline, and 299 were still moving through public disclosure via Trail of Bits' Daybreak program.

Why it matters: this is the first time anyone has put a costed ledger behind "AI-scale vulnerability hunting" — roughly $1,300 per root exploit. Defenders now have automation at the same scale as attackers; but the same capability in attackers' hands collapses the cost of finding flaws too, turning patch speed into the new race.

2. Baidu open-sources ERNIE 5.5 Flash: 280B parameters, only 14B active per token

Baidu open-sourced ERNIE-5.5-Flash-Base on November 5: 280 billion total parameters with 14 billion active per token, trained from scratch on 33.5 trillion tokens, with context windows up to 1 million tokens. It is an untrained base model intended for fine-tuning, instruction training and reinforcement learning; Baidu says a post-trained version will follow. Notably, ERNIE 4.5 shipped under Apache 2.0, while this release uses a custom license that prohibits use in the EU, UK and South Korea.

Why it matters: after Hy4 and Kimi K3.1, China's open-model wave has another member — but the geographic restriction in the license is a new signal. "Open" no longer means "unconditional": reading the license before commercial use is becoming mandatory homework.

3. Japan's PFN open-sources translation model PLaMo 3 Translate — smallest is 0.8B, runs on a phone

Preferred Networks announced on November 5 the open-weight release of PLaMo 3 Translate in four sizes — 0.8B, 2B, 8B and 31B — built on PLaMo 3 NICT, jointly developed with Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. Under the PLaMo Community License, individuals and enterprises with annual revenue of 1 billion yen or less can download and use the models free of charge, including commercially, running fully offline on smartphones, laptops and corporate servers. The models are now on Hugging Face.

Why it matters: translation is one of the few tasks where small specialized models can win — specialized model plus edge deployment is pulling a class of workloads back from cloud giants to local devices. The revenue-threshold license is also a design worth studying for open-source projects elsewhere.

4. Meta acquires multi-agent coding startup Conductor; cloud service shuts down November 20

Meta confirmed on November 5 it has acquired AI coding startup Conductor for an undisclosed price. Conductor's product lets developers assign different parts of a coding project to multiple AI agents working in parallel; its CEO and CTO will join Meta Superintelligence Labs under Nat Friedman and Alexandr Wang. TechCrunch confirmed Conductor's cloud service will shut down on November 20, after which customer cloud data will begin being deleted — its 100,000-plus users need to export their work now.

Why it matters: OpenAI buying Pierre and Meta buying Conductor on the same day tell the same story — the coding-agent race has moved from "whose model is smarter" to "who can turn multi-agent collaboration into a product". For users, the pattern is familiar: a beloved small tool gets acquired and shut down, and the data-exit window is often just two weeks.

5. OpenAI ships Images 2.6: native GIFs, character memory, 50% faster generation

OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Images 2.6 on November 5, adding native animated GIF creation and reusable reference-image anchoring for characters, plus two new API models — Flare (fast) and Sunburst (SVG-capable). Generation is about 50% faster than the previous generation, and weekly image volume on ChatGPT has passed 4 billion images.

Why it matters: image generation is moving from "one image at a time" to "reusable visual assets" — character anchoring plus GIFs targets the continuous production of social and marketing content, and 4 billion images a week shows images are already one of ChatGPT's biggest traffic drivers.

6. Apple Intelligence trial opens in China on Alibaba's Qwen, full rollout planned for December

Apple began its long-delayed Apple Intelligence trial in China on November 4, using Alibaba's Qwen models to comply with Beijing's AI rules. The feature arrives two years late, with a public rollout planned for December.

Why it matters: this is the first time Apple has staked a core AI feature entirely on a Chinese model — a landmark compliance-for-market trade. It also hands Qwen one of the world's most demanding hardware distribution channels, a brand and ecosystem win for Alibaba.

7. Anthropic's Claude cracks a 40-year mystery: first 3D structure of a bacterial vault particle

Anthropic announced on November 4 that its in-house biology team, working with Claude, mapped the first three-dimensional structure of a vault particle from prokaryotic life: Claude screened 15 billion predicted protein sequences, found candidates across 29 bacterial phyla and 4 archaeal phyla, and a bacteriophage protein called L05 self-assembled inside E. coli into a hollow barrel of 96 identical subunits (human vaults have 78), resolved by cryo-EM at 3.2 Å. The first complete structural model took 34 hours, and purification dropped from three days to 90 minutes. The findings are a bioRxiv preprint, not yet peer-reviewed — and Anthropic is candid that Claude also made mistakes, including one suggested additive that cost researchers two wasted weeks.

Why it matters: this is the first "AI does science" story with a complete ledger of both speed and error — the acceleration is real, and so are the mistakes. The structure itself matters too: a 96-subunit, size-tunable hollow protein shell is a natural candidate for nanoscale delivery, with biological significance beyond the methodology.

8. DeepSeek V5 reportedly to train on 160,000 Huawei Ascend 950DT chips, landing in 2027

TrendForce reported on November 3, citing Chinese outlets Caiwen News and Star Market Daily, that DeepSeek plans to pre-train its next model V5 primarily on Huawei Ascend 950 accelerators, targeting completion in 2027; Crypto Briefing says a new Ulanqab data center will deploy at least 160,000 Ascend 950DT accelerators, with pre-training starting as early as late 2026. Founder Liang Wenfeng reportedly said four Ascend 950 chips match one Nvidia GB300. Neither DeepSeek nor Huawei has confirmed the plan — and Ascend chips have so far been used mainly for inference at DeepSeek, so V5 would be the first frontier-class model natively pre-trained on domestic Chinese silicon.

Why it matters: if true, this is China's first break from Nvidia at the hardest link of the chain — training. The significance is not one or two generations of chip performance, but whether the full domestic "chip–framework–model" stack can run a frontier-scale training run. Until officially confirmed, it remains a high-signal supply-chain report.

One-line summary: Models are going omnicapable, tools are being acquired, compute is changing nationality — November 5's news shows the AI race expanding from "whose model is smarter" to "who can turn capability into product, and product into infrastructure".
