Daily eSIM | SimLocal: A Free 500MB Trial — and Local Plans with a Real Phone Number

"Daily eSIM" introduces one pay-as-you-go, prepaid, or free-trial eSIM every day. SimLocal offers the most generous free trial this column has covered — 500MB for 1 day, no credit card required — and, unusually, it also sells local-carrier plans from EE, Orange, and Three that come with a real local phone number.

In one line

SimLocal is an Irish travel-SIM veteran (in the business since 2011, eSIM coverage in 200+ destinations, 4 million customers per its website). Instead of roaming-based data, it sells you the local carrier's own plan: a UK plan is an EE or Three plan, a Europe plan is an Orange plan — connected directly to the local network. Single-country, regional, and global plans, all prepaid.

Plan type: pay as you go — local, regional, global

  • Free trial: new users claim it in the app — 500MB / 1 day, 99 countries, no credit card, hotspot supported (verified by Gohub, March 2026; still listed as the top free trial in a hands-on test dated November 3, 2026);
  • Fixed data packs: e.g. Global 500MB / 1 day for about £3 (~$4), Global 20GB for about $35, Global 100GB / 31 days for $90.50;
  • Unlimited plans: Europe 30 days, USA 15 days, UK 30 days, with a 10GB-per-day high-speed cap — not truly unlimited;
  • Local plans with calls & texts: UK, Netherlands, USA, and Europe options bundle data with calls, texts, and a local number (e.g. UK 30-day unlimited for about $47).

Price reference (as of November 6, 2026)

  • Free trial: 500MB / 1 day, $0 (new users, once, claimed in the app);
  • Entry: Global 500MB / 1 day, about £3 (~$4);
  • Common picks: Global 20GB about $35; Europe 30-day unlimited about $73.75; USA 15-day unlimited about $67;
  • Large pack: Global 100GB / 31 days, $90.50.

Prices vary by destination and are listed in mixed currencies (£ / € / $) — check the live price on simlocal.com before buying. Some popular plans (e.g. Orange Asia 20GB) currently show as out of stock on the official site.

Key question: can it receive SMS verification codes?

It depends on the plan: the free trial and global data packs cannot; local plans with a number theoretically can. SimLocal's own blog states that SMS verification and 2FA codes are "often supported (if SMS included)" on local plans, because you get a real local number from EE, Three, Lycamobile, and similar carriers. This has not been hands-on tested for this article: whether banks and platforms accept such travel numbers for OTPs varies by provider, so verify with a low-stakes use case before linking an important account.

Pros

  • The most generous free trial in this category: 500MB / 1 day, 99 countries, no credit card, hotspot allowed — enough for maps, rides, and check-ins on arrival day;
  • Direct local-carrier access: EE, Orange, Three, Lycamobile, DTAC, au Japan, and more — priority speeds instead of roaming middlemen;
  • One of the few travel eSIMs where you can get a real local number: UK, USA, Netherlands, and multi-country Europe plans include a number plus calls and texts;
  • Full refund if you change your mind before activation; physical stores and self-service kiosks in European airports (Heathrow T2–T5 included).

Cons

  • Plans cannot be extended or topped up — when one expires you must buy a new eSIM, so plan multi-leg trips carefully;
  • "Unlimited" plans cap high-speed data at 10GB per day, then throttle — heavy users are better off with a large fixed pack;
  • Mixed currencies (£ / € / $) make price comparison fiddly at checkout;
  • Some plans have activation quirks: Lycamobile USA requires self-registration with a US postcode; Three UK activation needs a 4-digit code sent by email;
  • The free trial lasts only 1 day and is one-time-only for new users.

Who it's for

  • Travelers who want to test connectivity free on arrival day before committing;
  • Anyone heading to the UK, Europe, or the USA who needs a real local number for verification codes and calls;
  • Multi-country trips needing a large 20GB or 100GB pack.

Not for: anyone wanting one permanent number for verification codes (the number expires with the plan); anyone expecting uncapped full-speed "unlimited" data; or travelers who want a purely data-only eSIM with zero activation steps.

Notes

Information compiled from SimLocal's official website (homepage, plan pages, official blog), Gohub's free-trial comparison (March 2026), a Travel eSIM Expert hands-on test (November 3, 2026), and esimdb / allthingsesim price comparisons, as of November 6, 2026. Note: an earlier entry in this column's candidate pool said the free trial had ended (per the official FAQ on October 28, 2026); this round of checks found the trial still offered (promoted on the official blog in July 2026 and still claimable in a November 2026 hands-on test). Plans and prices change frequently — confirm on the official site before buying. Not hands-on tested.
