Daily eSIM | TextNow: A Free US Number and Free eSIM — but Verification Codes Need a Paid Unlock
「Daily eSIM」introduces one pay as you go / prepaid / free-trial eSIM every day. Today's pick, No. 033, is a little different: it is not a global travel data card, but TextNow, a long-running free US phone service. The app gives you a free US or Canadian number with unlimited calls and texts between the US and Canada; add its free eSIM and you get on T-Mobile's 5G network in the United States, still at $0 a month. But the most important conclusion first: the free tier is not reliable for SMS verification codes. To receive codes you must first activate a SIM card or buy a paid subscription — and even then, not every platform accepts the number.
One-line verdict
TextNow is a free, ad-supported US phone service that works as a second US number in your phone: download the app, pick an area code and start calling and texting over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Layer on TextNow Wireless (on the T-Mobile network) and a free eSIM or physical SIM puts you on a real cellular network inside the United States. It is for "needing a US number", not for "needing a global roaming data card" — cellular coverage is US-only, and outside the US only the Wi-Fi/app mode remains.
Plan types: a free tier plus day / week / month data passes
- Free: a free US or Canadian local number; unlimited nationwide calls and texts; free international texts, international calls charged per minute (officially "starting at $0" — check per-country rates in the app); data for select apps (email, maps, rideshare, finance, iHeartRadio and others) up to 1GB; in-app ads;
- Plus: everything in Free, plus unlimited data excluding media streaming and gaming, no ads, and the official plan table lists "verification codes"; sold as day / week / month passes;
- Unlimited: everything in Free, plus fully unlimited data including streaming and gaming, no ads, and "verification codes" in the official plan table; sold as day / week / month passes;
- Lock In Number: a paid subscription that locks the number to your account so it cannot be recycled for inactivity; TextNow's help center lists it as one of the conditions for receiving verification codes;
- Ad-Free+: removes ads and adds number locking, call forwarding and voicemail transcription; also listed as a verification-code unlock.
Getting started is two steps: claim a free number in the app (usable over Wi-Fi immediately), then download a free eSIM in the app (iOS/Android, depending on phone model and OS) or buy a physical SIM to join the US network. Day passes do not auto-renew — service simply falls back to the $0 Free plan when they expire. Monthly unlimited plans are prepaid and cancellable at any time, falling back to Free without losing connectivity.
Prices (as of November 4, 2026, checked against TextNow's official new-plans blog post and TextNow 101 guide)
- Free tier: $0/month; free eSIM $0, physical SIM a one-time $3.99 on the Free plan and free with a data pass;
- Plus: $1.99 day pass, $4.99 weekly, $18.99 monthly;
- Unlimited: $2.99 day pass, $8.99 weekly, $35.99 monthly;
- Lock In Number: about $1.99/week; Ad-Free+: about $6.99/week (both from third-party compilations of April 2026 pricing, rechecked October 2026; TextNow notes prices are subject to change and the app shows the live price).
Prices per textnow.com and the in-app checkout; TextNow warns in several places that prices may change, so treat the figures above as a November 4, 2026 reference only.
Key question: can it receive SMS verification codes?
Free tier: mostly no. After a paid unlock: "most" codes, but never all. This conclusion has to be unpacked word by word, because the official wording and third-party testing tell two halves of the same story:
- Official wording: TextNow's help center says you can receive "most verification codes" by activating a TextNow SIM card or buying a Lock In Number or Ad-Free+ subscription. It adds two reservations: some services do not support TextNow numbers for verification or two-factor authentication at all; and Canadian verification codes are "largely unsupported" — buying a subscription for that purpose is not advised because it is not guaranteed;
- The line-type problem: TextNow numbers are classified as VoIP (internet-telephony) numbers in carrier databases. Strict platforms — Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Gmail among them, per third-party reviews — may reject a VoIP number before an SMS is even sent. No SIM or subscription changes the platform's rule, and TextNow itself advises checking with the app sending the code whether it supports TextNow's VoIP numbers;
- Recycling risk: a newly claimed number expires within 24 hours if you never call or text from it. After that there is no published fixed inactivity window ("no hard-and-fast rule" — TextNow sends a warning before revoking). Calling or texting at least once a day keeps a free number active indefinitely; Lock In Number / Ad-Free+ lock it regardless of use. A released number cannot be restored or reclaimed.
Bottom line: treat TextNow as a free US contact number plus a US backup data line, not as a verification workhorse. For bank, payment or primary-account two-factor codes, use a carrier number or one of this column's real-number products (Mobal, 3HK, PikaSim's real-number line). Use TextNow only for accounts you would not mind losing, and test it against the target platform before relying on it.
Pros
- Genuinely free: $0 number, unlimited US–Canada calls and texts, $0 eSIM, no monthly rent, no contract;
- Buy by the day: Plus/Unlimited passes come as day, week or month; day passes fall back to Free automatically, so a forgotten cancellation cannot keep charging you;
- Real cellular network inside the US: T-Mobile 5G with a coverage map to check, plus 1GB of select-app data on the free tier;
- Number portability: port an existing number in for free, and port out (keep the line active until the transfer completes);
- Everywhere app: iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and web — claim a number over Wi-Fi first, add the SIM later.
Cons
- Unreliable verification: the free tier is likely to be blocked by strict platforms; the paid unlock promises only "most" codes, and Canadian codes are largely unsupported;
- Free numbers get recycled: 24-hour expiry if never used, no fixed idle window afterwards, and a released number is gone for good — unsuitable as a sole long-term verification number;
- Cellular coverage is US-only: SIM coverage in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico was discontinued after July 30, 2026; outside the US the app works over Wi-Fi, but that is not a travel data card;
- Free tier limits: in-app ads, and data only for select apps — full browsing, video and gaming need Plus/Unlimited;
- Opaque international rates: the site only says "starting at $0" — per-country call rates must be checked in the app, unlike a travel eSIM's single all-in price.
Who it's for
- People in the US who want a $0 backup US number (job hunting, renting, taking local calls and texts);
- Anyone wanting a second US number to separate work and life, without depending on it for important verifications;
- Short US trips covered by a day data pass ($1.99/day and up — cheaper than hotel Wi-Fi plus roaming);
- Anyone who wants to try free first, then decide whether to pay for number locking or a data upgrade.
Not for: anyone counting on it for bank, payment or primary social-account verification; multi-country roaming data (see this column's data-only issues instead); a long-term, never-recycled primary number (the free tier cannot promise that, and locking costs a recurring subscription); cellular service outside the United States.
